Crocker Center for Civic Engagement hosts community salon

11/03/2009

FITCHBURG – The public is invited to a community salon being sponsored by the Crocker Center for Civic Engagement at Fitchburg State College.

The first such event, held in the spring, attracted more than 60 interested local leaders and community residents to discuss issues concerning the region.

The salon scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, will represent the next step in the process, said John Chetro-Szivos, chair of the Communication Media Department at Fitchburg State College and the director of the Crocker Center.

“We’re asking people to come in with specific things that Fitchburg State College can contribute to helping build a better, stronger community,” Chetro-Szivos said. “At this meeting we want to begin  thinking of ways we can begin to address these pressing issues.”

The Crocker Center has already begun work on several projects designed to share expertise from the college with the community at large. Aisling O’Connor of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, for example, will be bringing college students to local elementary schools this fall with interactive, hands-on chemistry activities. The hour-long sessions will be conducted at no charge to the local schools, but will complement the chemistry content of the physical science learning standards outlined by the state.

Another group of college students is working with local residents on their effort to build an affordable senior community.

Chetro-Szivos said he hopes to see three community salons conducted each year as the Crocker Center for Civic Engagement moves forward.

The salon will be held at the Mazzaferro Center on Highland Avenue on the Fitchburg State College campus. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Friday, Nov. 6, to 978-665-3260 or by email to pdelisle@fsc.edu.
